Jameos del Agua: Interplanetary Transspecies Laboratory

XII Lanzarote Biennial

Fall, 2024

Jameos del Agua: Interplanetary Transspecies Laboratory proposes to explore the island’s volcanic system as a node of controversies: from different forms of human and more-than-human life (ranging from tourism to the blind crab), to political and economic debates (such as the site’s role in transatlantic negotiations or the exploitation of bodies through slavery), as well as exchanges with both nearby and distant geographies (from the neighboring islands and West Africa to Martian explorations), temporalities (from its prehistoric formation to the present day), and cultural perspectives (from Indigenous traditions to contemporary transversalities).
The project spans a full day, from sunrise to sunset, through eight sessions consisting of lectures, roundtables, and presentations by geologists, biologists, volcanologists, writers, artists, and other experts.
